And that wraps up another epic Armageddon weekend!
Thanks to everyone who made it to the 4th annual Armageddon Paintball Event.
This 2 day event has grown each year and now with an entirely different venue and now running under the Auckland Paintball Club umbrella, its not slowing down a bit.
Bjorn form the Timberwolves handed over control over the event last year when he decided to move into other directions for paintball events. This was well received as rather that a single person organizing an entire weekend event, the work could be spread out within the APC comity. This meant we could put more into the event and do so easier and better than ever before.
A new venue was also opted to make for better gameplay, not that Widow Woods isnt an amazing field, its just that SAS Adventures is not as physically punishing and gave us more options for the game. Unfortunately on site camping was not an option with this new venue, but the incredible scenarios played made up for this. Plus Auckland is easy for accommodation so we were happy to change this from previous years.
Lets Play…
Day 1 was organized by Ollie and of course lived up to his reputation of advanced gadgetry and involving objectives. From previous years, we have learnt that simple is best when it comes to large scale games. Complicated scenarios are great, but with 100+ players, anything can happen. This years objectives were simple, 3 teams, each with 2 objectives and a base to defend. Destroy the other bases (signaled by Ollie’s automated electronic pyrotechnics) and capture electronically timed flag poles. Advanced yet simple. Just perfect.
Players moved around the field finding loot for extra points and had to avoid the tank with the unstoppable 50cal paintball gun mounted on top. Smoke and flares made for awesome atmosphere and the sportsmanship was tops with no complaints and all round high energy fun.
Day 2 was completely different and run by Tony, the owner of SAS Adventures. This guy knows his field better than anyone so its no surprise that he can make it work better than anyone else.
The scenario was Saving Private Ryan, where rather than a free roaming, objective based scenario, the players were lead through a linear push-back style attack and defend battle that spanned multiple ‘zones’. The background atmosphere was set with fireworks and special effects that added another level to the game. This was only topped by Tony’s awesome nerf rocket cannon, too much fun. This scenario worked well as the flow of fighting is controlled by the 2 teams leaders (NPC’s). They could control how fast the attacking force broke through the defenders and vise versa. This was the perfect way to play day 2 as it meant everyone got to shoot loads of paint, get heaps of kills and have tons of fun. A perfect way to wrap up the weekend.
Cats and Dogs?
A bit of bad luck with the weather, with all the planning in the world, there’s not much anyone can do about that. It was actually fine throughout most of the gameplay, in fact there was some really hot sunny patches. But unfortunately there were some mean downpoors in the morning on both days, which put a lot off people coming along a getting a day pass. In the end those people missed out big time, since when did a little rain stop WAR!
All the Ammo you can carry!
Well this is a tricky job for any paintball supplier. We have learnt from past events, it is impossible to satisfy every player at games like these when it comes to paintball quality. With mechanical, electros mag fed, pumps, pistols, there is no perfect ball that will shoot well in every marker. This year paint was supplied by Outpost 43 and Paintball Shop, meaning that each supplier could provide 2 grades of paint each so that everyone could find a ball that suited their gun. The paint was sold with ‘paint tokens’ where each player got 4 tokens with their entry. 1 token could be exchanged for 1 bag of 500 balls of their choice. This at first was a little confusing but after explaining to people that if they purchased a paint that simply did not like their gun, they could try a different ball next rather than commiting to an entire box. Once players got the idea, this system worked really well. This token system also meant that players could get more paint on the field, mid game without carrying cash. Brilliant!
Fresh Air
Auckland Paintball Club’s newly implemented HPA fill system worked perfectly. The new Nuvair fill stations were great and players could get a good 4500psi fill all day. This is one of the APC’s first major purchases and it show how well the club is growing.
Nom Nom Nom
Lunch is provided! This simple little extra is one of the things that helped form the Auckland Paintball Club in its current state. At every game the APC makes sure everyone gets some fuel and refreshments to keep you soldiering on. This is always included in the field fee. Armageddon was no different. It was a mission making all those burgers but totally worth it in the end, everyone loved the feed!
OP43 on Location
Of course Outpost 43 was setup with a pop-up shop fully stocked with all your paintball gear requirements. Thanks to everyone who swung by the shop and said hi! We dont do this to simply sell gear, we do it to promote the industry of paintball and to show people how fast this sport is growing. Cheers for your support!
